The late John Francis Reilly

The death has taken place of John Francis Reilly, Milton Keynes, England and formerly of Rathnacreeva, Ballyglass, Co. Mayo. John passed away on May 31, 2026, age 77, at home with his family following a short illness. He is fondly remembered in his home community of Ballyglass by many peers who held him in the highest regard. John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Predeceased by his mother and father, Mike and Maggie Reilly and his brother Micheal Reilly, John is deeply regretted by his beloved wife Maureen, his children Sharon, Michelle, John and Stephen, his daughters-in-law Lauren and Terri, son-in-law, Matt and his grandsons Joe, George, Luke, Milo, Archie and Tommy, by his siblings and the extended family and many friends in Co. Mayo and beyond to whom sincere sympathy is tendered.

John’s funeral will take place on this Tuesday, June 30, at 12.30pm at St Mary Magdalene Church, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes, England followed by a reception at the Cock Hotel, Stony Stratford. Ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm dilis.

Ballintubber GAA lotto

Ballintubber GAA lotto jackpot stood at €6,800 on Sunday night, June 21. 7, 11, 21 and 26 were the numbers drawn and there was no jackpot winner. Consolation prizes went to Colin Derrig, Siobhan Finnerty (Chicago), Carmel McGreal, Declan Joyce, Niamh Hughes and Breege Blake. The lotto jackpot stood at €6,900 last Sunday night, June 28.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations are extended to David O’Reilly and Rachel Heneghan who were married on Saturday, June 20, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Tubberclair. The couple are wished health and happiness down all the days of their married lives.

The results of Ballyglass FC lotto draw held on June 22, in the clubhouse. The numbers drawn from the drum were: 18, 23, 29 and 32. There was no winner of the €18,100 jackpot. Ladies soccer success

Huge congratulations to the Ballyglass FC U11 girls who were crowned shield final champions last week with an outstanding 5-0 victory over Killala AFC in Westport. In the Senior Women's FAI Shield competition, a superb performance from Ballyglass FC senior women saw them record a fantastic 9-1 away win over Colemanstown to book a place in the FAI shield last 16.

FAI Football Camps 2026

Mi-Wadi FAI Football Camps 2026 are coming to Ballyglass FC for an action-packed week of football, fun, and friendship. The important dates are; Monday, July 27, to Friday, July 31, running from 10am – 1pm. Boys and girls ages 6 to 14 of all skill levels are most welcome to attend. Carra Catchment notes

A sincere “Thank you” to everyone who attended the recent Lough Carra Catchment Association (LCCA) public meeting at Clogher Community Centre. There was a fantastic turnout, and it was wonderful to see such strong community support for the protection and preservation of Lough Carra.

A huge thank you also to the guest speaker Karen Delanty from Inland Fisheries Ireland, for an incredibly informative presentation on the Lough Carra Stream electrofishing programme and recent fish stock assessments.

Attendees received vital updates on recent LCCA initiatives and the ongoing work of the Lough Carra LIFE Project and Community Engagement. The high attendance and lively discussions highlighted just how deeply the community cares about the local environment.

The late Sally Gibbons

The death has occurred of Sally Gibbons neé Walsh, Goirtín na Coille, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. Sally passed away peacefully, in her 68th year, surrounded by her loving family in the care of Mayo Hospice on June 20. Pre-deceased by her beloved husband Martin, son Martin John, brother James and her parents Jimmy and Bridget Walsh, she is deeply regretted by her daughters Sarah Jane (John) and Marie, her grandchildren Luke, Adam, Ellie, Darragh, Romy and Maddie and also by her brother Martin, sisters Bridie and Mary, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Sally’s remains reposed at the St. Mary’s Funeral Home, Tourmakeady on Monday evening of last week from 6pm until 7.30pm. The removal of her remains took place on the Tuesday morning to St. Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady for her Funeral Mass at 12 noon, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. Retirement

Retirement Mass for Mrs. Teresa Hoban took place on last Tuesday, June 23, at 7pm in Killawalla Church. Refreshments were served afterwards in the community centre. Teresa is wished many happy years of good health and enjoyment in the decades ahead.

May she rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.

Water Refill Station

Belcarra Tidy Towns and Belcarra Community Co-Op were delighted to invite the community to the official launch of the new Belcarra Water Refill Station on last Thursday, June 25, at 9.45am. Located beside the playground, the refill station will provide easy access to fresh drinking water and encourage children and families to stay hydrated while reducing single-use plastic waste.

The group were delighted to welcome pupils and teachers from 3rd, 4th and 5th class of Belcarra National School for the special occasion. To mark the launch, every pupil in the school received a reusable water bottle and a copy of the booklet “All about Water”. This project is another positive step towards a healthier, more sustainable Belcarra.

Belcarra Tidy Villages

A huge thank you has been extended to everyone who has been planting, watering, weeding, and helping to keep Belcarra community looking it’s very best. Every flower, every tidy corner, and every small effort contributes to the beautiful village. Festival success

Claire and Larry of the Punch Bowl, Ballyheane were delighted to have Ballyheane National School as their festival charity partner for 2026. Ash Dieback Information

A very interesting event was hosted in Balla on Monday, June 22. Mayo County Council in partnership with UCD and Teagasc are working towards developing a Citizen Science experiment in Mayo. The project ‘Ash for Future’ is an ongoing nationwide research initiative that seeks to identify healthy ash trees, with the aim of gathering plant materials from them, cloning them and creating a disease-tolerant future gene bank. The late Bridie Feeney

The death has taken place of Bridie Hopkins (neé Feeney), Newtown, Clogher, Claremorris. Bridie passed away peacefully in her 92nd year in the loving care of Ballinamore Nursing Home on Friday, June 19. In her 92nd year Bridie was born in Carramore and spent most of her working life in England before returning to Carrowkeel with her husband Leo to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Pre deceased by her husband Leo and her granddaughter, Ellie, Bridie is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sons Kevin and Stephen, daughter-in-law Deirdre, grandchildren Lee, Niamh, Nathan, Samuel, Aaron, and Tilly, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours to whom sincere condolences are tendered.

Bridie’s remains reposed at Coady’s Funeral Home on last Tuesday from 5.30 until 7pm, followed by removal to St Marys Church Carnacon. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 12 noon with funeral afterwards to Drum Cemetery. May she rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.

Clogher Pride of Place

Great news for the Clogher community which has been chosen by Mayo Co Council to go forward for the Pride of Place competition in the population category 300 - 1000. The judging for the competition takes place on Wednesday, July 22, between 2 - 5pm at the Clogher Community Centre, and the judges will also be taken on a tour of the whole Clogher area. The competition encompasses all the geographical areas and organisations in the community. There will be a meeting in the community centre each Monday at 8pm in the run up to July 22, in preparation for the judging. Everyone is invited to participate.

Clogher cards

Clogher Card results for Friday, June 19, were 1st, Breege Blake and Mary McDonagh sharing with Majella Corbett and Gus Sweeney, 2nd Jimmy Connor and Tommy Lyons sharing with Gay Conway and Joe Thomas, 3rd Eileen Donnelly and Eileen Moran. The game continues every Friday at 9pm. All card player’s novice and experienced are welcome.

Clogher 500 draw

The committee thank all their patrons for their continued support during the past year. There are still two more draws left in this year's draw cycle, June and July, after which there will be the opportunity to renew for the following year.

Tuesday walks

The Tuesday evening walks are proving to be a great success and will continue for July and August at 7pm at the Clogher Heritage Complex (F12 PF99). There are three different lengths of walk to enjoy along the quiet bog roads. Everybody in Clogher and its environs is invited to come along on Tuesday evenings and enjoy the peace and quiet and flora and fauna of the Clogher Bog, followed by a cup of tea and a chat. For health and safety sturdy walking shoes and hi vis jackets are recommended. The Heritage Cottage is open Monday to Friday from 10 to 4pm.

Errew Ladies Group

Errew Ladies Group meets up for a chat, a cuppa and different organised activities on Wednesdays in Errew Community Centre at 7pm.
