Local Notes: Meelick NS students took part in the Cross-Border Orchestra at the Peace Proms.

Pupils from 5th and 6th classfrom Meelick NS, Swinford, had a lovely time taking part in the Cross-Border Orchestra at the Peace Proms recently in Limerick. The concerts promote peace, unity and tolerance on the island of Ireland. These inspirational shows featured 35,000 children from every corner of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

WEEE recycling event

An electrical recycling day (WEEE Recycling Event) will take place at Swinford Golf Club, on Saturday, March 1, from 10am - 4pm. Householders will have an opportunity to recycle any waste electrical items, batteries or energy saving lightbulbs for free - anything household with a plug, a lead, or a battery, at the end of its useful life and this includes large and small household items. Recycling e-waste is beneficial for the environment and the economy. By recycling e-waste, it is diverted from landfill, and recovers raw materials for reuse. It also ensures that hazardous materials in these items are safely and responsibly disposed of.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on February 17, were: 4, 8, 9 and 23. There was no jackpot winner. €70 vouchers were won by David Langford, Killasser and Linda O'Hara, Swinford; €35 was won by Mick McGloin, Cloonfinaune. The jackpot is now €3,600.

Moll 

An extra performance of Moll will be held in Cloonacool Community Centre on Thursday, February 27, at 8pm with all proceeds to Tubbercurry Cancer Support Centre and Tubbercurry Community First Responder Group. Not forgetting Tuesday, March 4, also at 8pm, Moll will be at Tubbercurry St Brigid's Hall during Western Drama Festival. 

Golf Club card results

Results of the game played on Thursday, February 13, at 9pm; 1st Michael Regan and Leo Murtagh, 2nd Philip Irwin and Gerry Ronayne, 3rd Michael Ryan and Francie Rowley. Raffle prizes were won by Maureen Morley x 2, Francie Rowley and Esther Munnelly. 

Swinford Indoor Market

Swinford Indoor Market committee are excited to welcome everyone back for the first Swinford Indoor Market of 2025 after their brief break. The market will take place on Saturday, March 1, in Swinford Cultural Centre from 10.30am to 2pm. This timing accommodates the annual general meeting (AGM), which will follow at 3pm, and everyone is encouraged to attend. This market will feature a fantastic selection of vendors offering locally sourced produce, unique crafts, and many other items that are sure to captivate the diverse crowd. Cácaí Acla will be serving teas, coffees, and their delicious bakes indoors.

GAA 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Clodagh Gleeson who won €487 in last week’s Swinford GAA Club 50/50 draw. The online entry draw for a €50 voucher for Eurospar Swinford sponsored by VPR Accountancy was won by Douglas Kelly.

Congratulations Shane

Well done to Shane Moran of Swinford AC on his recent success in Camel City. Shane competed in the mile and having won his heat went on to be the overall meet winner running a 4:13:12 which was an indoor flat track personal best.

Jungle Challenge tickets

Swinford Killasser LGFA registration

Registration is now open on Foireann for the 2025 season. Register before March 31. Any player not registered by March 31, will not be able to participate in 2025 training from that date as they will not be insured. Contact club registrars, Carmel Heaney or Patricia Smyth.

St Patrick’s Day Parade

Swinford’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Monday, March 17, at 3pm. This year’s theme is The Year That Was.

Coolegrane Lights

The total amount raised by the Coolegrane Lights display this year was €8,250. Thank you to everyone who donated to the charity over the festive season.

AGM

The annual general meeting of Swinford and District Gardening Club will take place at 8pm on Tuesday, February 25, in the Meeting Room, Lower Main St, Swinford. 

Music classes

Michael Davitt CCE (Swinford Comhaltas) music and singing classes are held on Saturday mornings in Scoil Muire agus Treasa (Swinford NS). Enrolment/classes begin from 10.30am and all ages from 6 upwards are welcome. Instruments include banjo, button accordion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, keyboard, and tin whistle. Swinford AC will hold a table quiz in Julians of Midfield on Friday, March 7, at 9pm. Tables of 4 cost €40. There will be fantastic prizes to be won and all proceeds go to Swinford Athletics Club Track Development.

KCC 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Mick Lynch on winning the January Killasser Community Centre 50/50 draw winning a prize of €570. €20 spot prizes were won by Karen Convey and Gerry Moore. The February draw will take place on Sunday, March 9.

Quiz Night

A quiz night hosted by The Railway Players will take place on March 1, in Bolands Bar, Swinford at 9pm. Tables of 4 cost €40, and there will be raffle prizes on the night.

Fr Joseph expresses his thanks

Fr Joseph Gavigan PP, Kilmovee has expressed his sincere thanks to all who acted in a Christian neighbourly fashion towards each other in the parish community in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn. Particular thanks to those who repaired the minor damage done to the roofs of Kilmovee, Kilkelly and Urlaur Churches.

The late Henry Crean Moyne

The death took place of Henry Crean Moyne, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon on February 18, peacefully with his family by his side in the wonderful care of the nurses and staff at the Roscommon Hospice. Henry was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Cassie and his sister Phil (Finn) and is survived by his wife Catherine, sons Henry, James and Declan and daughter Jacqueline (Lally), son-in-law Patrick, Henry’s partner Kerri Ann, grandchildren Henry Óg, Willow, Autumn and Cathal, sister Maureen (Cafferky), brothers-in-law Tommy and Gerald, sister-in-law Brenda, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Henry reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Thursday, February 20, from 5.30 with removal at 7.15 to The Church of the Sacred Heart, Fairymount (via Moyne) arriving at 8 pm. Mass of the Resurrection on Friday, February 21, at 11am followed by interment in Fairymount (Old) Cemetery. May Henry rest in peace.

The late James (Jimmy) McLoughlin

The death took place of James (Jimmy) McLoughlin, Glosh, Carracastle, Charlestown, and formerly of Harehills and Burley, Leeds, England. James was predeceased by his parents James and Louise and is survived by his brother Tommy, sisters Kathleen, Mary and Bridie, his nephews Paul, David and Keith, Keith's wife Mary, his brothers-in-law, neighbours and friends.

James reposed in Horkans Funeral Home, Charlestown on Saturday, February 15, from 5 to 7pm. followed by removal to St. James Church, Carracastle arriving at 8pm. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Sunday, February 16, at 12 noon followed by interment in Carracastle Cemetery. May James rest in peace.

Moy Davitts Manager

Moy Davitts are delighted to welcome Paul McGarry on board as manager of the senior football team for the 2025 season. Paul has had an extensive career in Gaelic Football, both on and off the pitch, winning numerous county titles along with the 2005 All Ireland Club championship with Ballina Stephenites before undertaking a managerial career which has seen him reach the 2021 and 2022 county Junior finals with Cill Chomain and lead Mayo Gaels to senior safety in the last two seasons.

Defibrillators

A defibrillator is now available in Tooromeen located outside the home of Siobhán and Gerry Meehan. It is a great facility to have for all the surrounding area.

The Shraheens Defibrillator is now installed and available in the event of an emergency. More trained volunteers are being sought. Contact Mary O’Brien, Colm Carney or Sean Galligan on 087 2775740 if you have any questions. Contributions are still being collected.

A Call Out to all Knitters/Crocheters 

 A Call Out to all Knitters/Crocheters for help creating Bohola Girl Guides St Patrick's Day parade entry. They would love 15cm (6in) squared or bigger knitted or crocheted squares in any shade of green. Squares can be dropped to Alice at Bingo any Monday evening or to the community centre on Tuesday evenings between 6pm and 7pm at the Girl Guide meetings by March 4. Any help big or small is much appreciated.

Enrolment evening

Bohola NS is currently accepting applications for 2025-2026. An enrolment evening will be held on Tuesday, March 4, from 5 to 6pm. Application forms are available by emailing the school at boholaschool@gmail.com or by phoning 094 9384271.
