Mammogram services 'due to return to Mayo in June'

Women in Mayo will once again be able to access mammogram services closer to home, with confirmation from the HSE that the service will resume at Castlebar Primary Care Centre on June 16 next.
Minister of State and Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has welcomed the decision, saying it will bring relief to many women and families who were worried by the temporary suspension and the need to travel to Galway for appointments.
Minister Dillon said he raised the matter directly with the HSE and the Minister for Health’s office after receiving several representations from constituents.
“This is welcome news for women across Mayo. Mammogram services are essential, and no patient should have the added worry of long travel when they are already dealing with health concerns.
“I know this temporary suspension caused real anxiety for women and families. Access to healthcare should not depend on where you live. Mayo patients deserve timely care, close to home.”
The HSE has confirmed that appointments were temporarily redirected to Galway while cover was being arranged. A permanent radiographer has now been recruited and is due to take up the post.
Minister Dillon added: “I am pleased that a permanent appointment has been made, but it is not good enough that patients were left facing long journeys during this period. Rural counties like Mayo must have fair and reliable access to essential health services.
“I will continue to press the HSE to ensure the Castlebar service resumes as planned on June 16, and that proper staffing is in place to protect the long-term future of mammogram services in Mayo."
