Well done to the Enniscrone Kilglass Community Games U13 boys indoor soccer team who are Connacht Champions and who competed in the National finals at the weekend.

Blue Flag for Enniscrone Beach

Enniscrone has been awarded a Blue Flag for Enniscrone Beach, the first time since 2014. This is a huge boost for the area coming into the summer and Enniscrone was also awarded a Green Coast Award for 2024. Cllr Joe Queenan said ‘this is a big day for Enniscrone on top of all the good news projects in recent weeks including the beach facility toilets and showers and new promenade project. Well done to all who helped achieve this – Coast Care committee, Enniscrone and District Community Council, Sligo County Council Environment Section and Roads Section, the area engineer Joe Devaney and all the outdoor staff from the council, and Enniscrone Tidy Towns and all their volunteers’.

Connacht winners of ‘ULI Excellence in Placemaking’

Congratulations to the  local primary schools Killeenduff NS, Kilglass NS, Stokane NS, Rathlee NS and Leaffoney NS who are the Connacht winners of the ‘ULI Excellence in Placemaking’ awards for their creative and original project ‘Lochrainn na Ronta’.

A year ago the children gathered on Enniscrone beach for the light installation of mythical selkies, and what a beautiful evening it was. The project was the culmination of a series of creative workshops in the schools with artists Tom Meskell and musician Rossa O’Snodaigh as part of their continued works as a Creative Cluster. Videographer Fionn Rogers captured all the excitement on the evening with all the schools gathering together to showcase their beautiful work of art.

The late Jerry Fitzgerald

The death took place on Saturday, May 18, of Jerry Fitzgerald, Ferran Terrace, Ballina, and late of Carrowhubbock South, Enniscrone. He was predeceased by his parents John and Annie Kate, brothers Noel, Christy, Eddie, Jim, Joe, Sean, Paddy and sister Ann. Jerry was the beloved father of Carol, Keith, Stacey and David. He will be sadly missed by his sons, daughters, their mother Catherine, grandchildren, sisters Cathy and Mary, David’s partner Mary Theresa, Stacey’s partner Ryan, in-laws, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Jerry reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Monday evening from 5.30pm with removal at 7pm to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone, arriving at 7.30pm. Requiem Mass was held on Tuesday morning at 11am followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Enniscrone. May he rest in peace.

Girls only Summer Camp

3k and 5k Fun Run Series is back

West Sligo Athletics Club are delighted and very excited that their 3k and 5k fun run series is back again this year. This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to get together and keep fit, families to run together and more importantly have fun. It will be a timed event but it is more about taking part, keeping fit and getting together. The first event started yesterday evening, May 27 in Easkey at 7pm and it will continue next week June 3, in Enniscrone at 7pm; June 10, Stokane at 7pm and June 17, Castleconnor at 7pm. The cost is adults €25 for the series or €10 per race. The cost for children is €15 for the series or €5 per race.

Enniscrone Tidy Towns

Enniscrone Tidy Towns extend thanks to the many people and groups who completed their online Sustainability Questionnaire. The responses will be used to form the basis of a Sustainability Plan for Enniscrone Tidy Towns which will be available on-line shortly. There were some great ideas which they would love to develop and they very much appreciate the compliments about their voluntary work.

Flower fund for church

Contributions to the Flower Fund in both Enniscrone and Kilglass churches can be made by placing money in an envelope and dropping into the collection basket at Mass. Thanks has been extended to Katarina for the floral arrangements over Easter.

Academic Excellence Awards

Congratulations to all the winners from 1st to 6th years of the Jesus and Mary Secondary School Academic Excellence awards, which were presented recently. Very well done to the wonderful leaving cert nominees for Student of the Year, which was awarded to Sarah Hughes and Beth Johnston. Congratulations also to Rory Esler who won the St Claudine Thevenet Award for his outstanding contribution to the spirit of the school.

At the prizegiving night the school honoured their sportspeople - junior girls, boys U14/U16, Connacht athletics, county Gaelic football team boys and girls, county soccer team boys and girls and others on different teams. Also honoured were the Junk Kouture National finalists, Young Scientist National finalists, Healthy Home Cookery finalist, International Athletics finalist, National and International Horsejumping finalists, Irish dancing national finalists, and Connacht and National traditional musicians.

Sr Mary who is retiring after a remarkable 29 years of service as principal in the school, has lead the school in a course of continuous growth and development and positive changes to enhance school life for all – curriculum development, broad range of subjects to suit all interests and abilities, development of sporting facilities – gym, astro turf, specialist (science, TG, woodwork, home economics, special education) rooms, canteen, new classrooms and IT and subject resources.

West Sligo Athletics

Well done to all the athletes from the West Sligo Athletic club on their impressive performances and well-deserved medals at the Co Sligo Track and Field championships held in ATU Sligo. They all put in huge efforts.

The U12 boys relay team came an impressive 2nd place – Finn Reynolds, Matthew Coen, Brendan O’Meara and Sean Forde. Matthew Coen was placed 1st in the 60m, and Emily Tuffy place 1st in the 100m; Eoin O’Connor was placed 1st in the U13 shot putt with Alex Boirje Ginty placed 3rd; Sean Forde was placed 3rd in the U12 long jump.

County Fleadh official opening concert

The Sligo County Fleadh official opening concert will be held on Friday, May 31, at 7.30pm in Easkey Community Centre. Entry is free and the concert will feature Glor na dTonn Ceili Band, Broga Briomhar Dance School, Tireragh CCE Performance Group and The Donagher Family.

On Saturday, June 1, at 9.30pm, there will be a ceili in Easkey Community Centre, with the Swallows Tail Ceili Band featuring Tom Doherty, Michael Hurley, John McHugh, Marie McHugh, and Michael Sheridan. Coming from Co Sligo and Mayo this wonderful band has played nationally and internationally. Their music will get you up on your fee and dancing the night away. Light refreshments will be served and admission is €10.

On Sunday, June 2, Seoid - Kerrie Herrity, Kenny Donagher, John Dwyer and Fiachra Guihen and Sinead Johnston, Ryan Sheridan and Conor McDonagh, will perform at 8.30pm in Easkey Community Centre.

Cemetery Mass

Cemetery Mass will be celebrated in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass/Enniscrone, on August Bank Holiday Weekend, Sunday, August 4, at 6pm; in Killanley Cemetery, Castleconnor on Saturday, June 15, at 8pm; in Roslea Cemetery, Easkey, on Friday, August 2, at 7pm and in Dromore West Churchill Cemetery on August 4, at 12 noon.

Walking Wednesdays

Kilglass Parish Community Centre in association with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership are running a 5 week Walking Wednesdays programme. The first walk was held on Wednesday last, May 22. It lasts about 45mins and is followed by tea/coffee in the hub. The cost is €2 per week. For more information contact kilglasscommunitycouncil@gmail.com.

Kilglass Foroige

Congratulations is extended to Kayden Hannon Gordon, Kilglass Foroige, who has been accepted to participate in the Foroige Leadership for Life Conference in Maynooth University in July. The club are looking forward to hearing about his journey and they are delighted that Kayden is representing Kilglass Foroige and West Sligo.

Community Employment Information Morning

A Community Employment Information Morning will be held on Thursday, May 30, in Dromore West Community Centre from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The event is run by Tireragh Community Support and West Sligo Forum in conjunction with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. Come along to find out more about community employment opportunities in your area. Have a cup of team and a chat with local CE supervisors and participants in an informal setting. Toilets open for Summer season

Toilets in both the Hallow and at the Pier will remain open for the rest of the summer after Sligo County Council agreed a contract with a cleaning company to maintain them. Thanks has been extended to all the volunteers who helped over the winter months keeping the toilets open.

Indoor Food and Craft Market

The Indoor Food and Craft Market will continue each Saturday in The Old Church, Enniscrone, from 11am to 3pm. It features a wide range of handmade gifts, paintings, home baking, fresh vegetables, bric a brac and local crafts.

Well done to the Castleconnor Community Games U12 lads who came away 5-2 winners over Rosses Point and progress to the next round.

GAA lotto

The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA lotto held on Saturday, May 18, were 19, 26, 28, and 30. Congratulations to Derek Duffy who matched 3 numbers and won €200, also congratulations to Sean Gordon who won €50 on the lucky dip. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on Saturday, May 25, was €21,700.

Community Games

A great day was had at the Castleconnor Community Games track and field event on Sunday, May 19, with the sun shining and lots of fun. The organisers extend thanks to Muddy Burns, Moloney Supervalu, Ballina, Checkout, Enniscrone, and Hilltop Service Station for their generous sponsorship, and to all who volunteered on the day to make it such a success.
