Successful Nollaig na mBan celebration

A heartfelt ‘Thank You’ for a wonderful Nollaig na mBan celebration has been extended by Ballintubber management and staff. They have expressed their gratitude to everyone who joined the Nollaig na mBan event on January 4, where an incredible €1,476.64 was raised. Half of the funds will go to the Hospice, and the other half will support the development of the Ballintubber Abbey Cultural and Heritage Visitor Centre which is due to begin later this year.

A massive thank you has been extended to all the companies and businesses in the Tourism Network and the wonderful suppliers of the Ballintubber Abbey Gift Shop who donated spot prizes, and Corley’s for hosting such a fantastic night.

Ballintubber GAA lotto

Ballintubber GAA lotto jackpot stood at €9,000 on Sunday night, February 23. The numbers drawn were 20, 25, 30 and 35.

Consolation prizes went to Sally Cronin, Bridie Kerrigan, Paul McHugh, Ciara McManamon, Michael Hallinan and Martin and Marie Summerville. The jackpot stood at €9,100 on last Sunday night, March 2.

Burriscarra NS open evening

An open evening will take place at Burriscarra National School, Carnacon on next Friday evening, March 7 between 5 and 7pm. There will be a science exhibition from the children of the school to exhibit some of the work carried out in the classrooms. For further information contact on 094 9060184.

Active Age night out

The Ballyglass Active Age group donned their finest for an evening in Corley’s, Ballintubber to celebrate Valentine’s Day. A very enjoyable evening was had by all with good food and good company being the highlights of the evening. The ladies were all treated to a rose while the men were given chocolates to mark the occasion. Thanks to Mary, Maureen and Agnes for organising the event and to the wonderful staff in Corley’s for the excellent food and service.

Partry Athletic underage presentation and registration night took place on a recent Sunday in the community centre in Partry. Thomas Kelly, chairman of Partry Athletic underage committee opened the prestigious awards ceremony at the 2025 registration and presentation night. Those who received awards were the U14 boys’ team for winning their league in 2024, the U12 boys who won their league in 2024 and the U13 boys who won the league and cup in 2024. Also honoured were The U12 Partry Athletic girls’ team who were victorious in winning their league.

Childminding Development Grant

Norma Foley, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has announced details of the 2025 Childminding Development Grant. The grant provides up to €1,000 to assist both registered and unregistered childminders who are providing a childminding service in their own homes. The purpose of the grant is to assist minders in enhancing the quality and safety in their service through the purchase of toys, childcare equipment, safety equipment, equipment to support inclusion and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM) education. The grant was also used for the purchase of IT equipment to assist childminders to engage with training and registration processes. The grant scheme is open to all childminders, including those who are planning to open a childminding business during 2025. 75% of the grant is paid in advance to help childminders with the upfront costs of purchasing equipment. The late Bridie Winter

The death took place last week of Bridie Winter (nee Jordan), late of Breaffy and Garryduff Park, Castlebar and Dorset, UK. Bridie passed away on February 24, in the care of the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar. Predeceased by her husband Richard, parents Michael and Mary Ann, brothers Paddy, Christy, Vincent, Brendan, Desmond and Kevin, sisters Jo (Walsh) and Geraldine (Jordan), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces Bridie is deeply regretted by her loving family, sister Roseleen (Heverin), brothers Mick, Johnny and Gabriel, step daughter Tanya, brother-in-law Ger, sisters-in-law Beatrice, Ann, Elizabeth and Mary, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is tendered.

Her remains reposed in Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar on last Wednesday, February 26, from 5.30pm with removal at 7pm to St Aloysius Church, Breaffy. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday morning at 11am followed by burial afterwards in Breaffy Cemetery. Ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm.

Breaffy GAA lotto jackpot winner

Breaffy GAA lotto stood at a massive €29,000 for the February 25 draw. The numbers drawn were 5, 14, 26 and bonus number 4.

Congrats to the winner Richard Browne, Newport, Co. Mayo, who had the lucky numbers allowing him to scoop the huge jackpot. The jackpot commences again at €15,000 for the March 11 draw in the clubhouse.

Davitt does the business!

Congrats to Breaffy clubman, Davitt Neary on his superb performance against Armagh in Division 1 of the League on Saturday week last. His overall contribution with a superbly taken goal ensured he was voted the worthy recipient of the Mayo GAA blog ‘Man of the Match’ award.

Breaffy G.A.A was delighted to receive news of €50,000 funding under the Community Recognition Fund for their Energy and Sustainability Works application. The fund is for upgrading sports facilities, improving community spaces, enhancing public amenities.

The late Anne Gannon

The death has taken place of Anne Gannon nee Daly better known as Doll, Kantara, Breaffy Road, Castlebar, Co. Mayo and formerly of Westport. Anne passed away on February 21 at the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar, surrounded by her loving family. Her passing is an occasion of great sorrow to her family and many peers and friends. Predeceased by her loving husband Austin (Austie), her beloved sons Joe, John and Michael, her parents Nora and Tom, her sisters Kathleen and Betty and her brother Thomas, she is deeply regretted by her family; Anne, Tommy, Olive, Alan and Karen and their partners, in-laws, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her niece Ann, cousins, relatives and many friends to whom sincere sympathy is tendered.

Anne’s remains reposed in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar on Sunday, February 23, from 5.30 to 7pm. The removal of her remains took place from her home on Monday at 10.30am arriving to St. Aloysius Church, Breaffy for Funeral Mass 11.30am. Funeral ceremonies took place afterwards to the New Cemetery, Castlebar. May she rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.

Parish Mission

A parish mission will take place in Balla and Belcarra churches on March 24, 25, 26, and 27. The devotions will alternate between the two churches. The mission will be conducted by the FFR, Moyross, Limerick. The friars will preach at the Masses on the preceding Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23. Further details will follow.

Drum Inn table quiz

There will be a table quiz held on Saturday, March 8, in The Drum Inn, Clogher. The event will start at 9pm. Tables of 4 are required at a €40 fee. All proceeds to support the Breege Canavan Return Home Fund.

Belcarra lotto

Mayo FC Soccerthon

Congratulations to Balla Secondary School 5th year students Ella Donovan, Sophie Cunningham, and Grace McHale on reaching the regional final of Junk Kouture. Their entry, 'Society's Angel', will be showcased at the Helix in Dublin. The girls have demonstrated remarkable creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication in their work. Balla Secondary School has been awarded €50,000 funding under the Community Recognition Fund for their Changing Rooms Scheme. Congrats also to Manulla FC who are to receive €89,673 funding for car park upgrades also under the Community Recognition Fund.

The late Michael Higgins

The death has taken place of Michael Higgins, Dublin and formerly of Knocknakill, Mayo Abbey, Claremorris, Co. Mayo Michael passed away on Thursday, February 20. Michael resided in Dublin for the past 31 years and worked in the National Botanic Gardens, indulging his love of plants which he had from a very early age. He will be very much missed by his many colleagues and friends at the gardens. Fundraising bingo night

Mayo Abbey National School and Mayo Gaels GAA Club are hosting a fundraiser with the help of Balla bingo committee. They are having a monster Bingo night on March 5, online and in Balla Community Centre. The funds raised during this event will be directed towards the development of an all-weather astro pitch (80ft by 40ft) that will serve Mayo Abbey National School / Mayo Gaels GAA club and the broader community groups and parishes.

Community Futures

Clogher Environmental Group and Community Council supported by Mayo Community Futures are embarking on a Community Action Plan. The purpose of the Community Action Plan is to give the community a chance to identify priorities and ideas for the development of the area over the next five years. A key component of the process is to give everyone in the community an opportunity to engage with the plan and to put ideas forward. Representatives from all the groups in the community and interested individuals are encouraged to attend the meetings which take place on Thursday nights at 8pm in the community centre. Stakeholder interviews are currently taking place, and planning has commenced for the distribution and collection of the survey which will go to each house in the area. We hope that everybody will engage with the process.
