On last Sunday week, October 8, the Ballintubber GAA Club jackpot stood at €7,000 and the numbers drawn were 11, 25, 27 and 31. The annual general meeting of Ballintubber GAA Club will be held in Clogher Clubrooms on Sunday evening, November 10, at 5pm. All who support the club and participate in its activities are asked to be in attendance.

The late Mairéad Duffy

The death has taken place recently of Mairéad Duffy, Ranelagh, and formerly of Devon Park, Galway. Mairéad passed away peacefully on October 2, peacefully in St Vincent’s Private Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She is deeply regretted by her husband Antoine, her children Eoghan, Méabh, Séamus and Fiachra, their spouses Stephen and Britney, their partners Fiona and Stephanie, her grandson Eoghan Óg, her brother James and family and friends and relatives to whom sincere condolences are extended.

Her remains reposed at her home on Friday, October 4, from 4-7pm. The removal of her remains took place on the Saturday morning to the Church of the Holy Name, Beechwood arriving for 10am Funeral Mass followed by burial in Burriscarra Cemetery, Clogher, Co. Mayo. Ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm.

Awards Night

Ballyglass FC will hold its awards night on Sunday, October 27, at 9pm in the Carra Lodge. There will be music and finger food on the night and all are welcome.

Congratulations Caoimhe

Congrats to Caoimhe Corcoran, who has been selected for the Mayo U12s Girls Interleague squad for the 2024/2025 season. Caoimhe is the daughter of Sean and Anne Corcoran, Ballinaglea. Everyone in Ballyglass FC is very proud of Caoimhe and is supportive of her and her teammates on for the season ahead.

Song-Writing workshop

The next “What’s the Story?” storytelling event in the popular series will be on Saturday, October 26, when Ballyglass Community Centre (F12D500) welcomes the renowned singer songwriter, John Spillane. Village Maintenance

In an effort to keep the beautiful village of Ballyglass looking her best, a group of volunteers will meet at the community centre every Wednesday evening from 6.30 to 7.30 for a clean-up. Sweeping, light weeding, litter-picking, etc. are the tasks required. If you can spare an hour a week, you are most welcome to join. Call Breege on 087 6292164 to put your name down. Anyone who has their own tools, gloves and high-vis jacket is asked to bring them along.

Hallowe’en Market

Save the date and dust off the costumes for the Hallowe’en market in Ballyglass Community Centre, on Saturday, October 19. Mark your calendars for a spooktacular day at Ballyglass Market. Come for a fang-tastic time filled with ghoulishly good deals, eerie-sistible treats, and a hauntingly fun atmosphere. You'd be batty to miss it.

Yoga classes

Dublin City Marathon

Michael Corcoran is looking for support in his annual Dublin City Marathon run coming up on Sunday, October 27. Over the past few years a lot of miles have been ran and money raised for Crumlin Children's Hospital, Motor Neurone and Cancer Ireland where over €13,000 have been raised for those worthy charities. 'This year to drive me on I'm running for Epilepsy Ireland which is something that affected me in my younger years and affects over 40,000 in Ireland. Biodiversity Fund

The Community Foundation Ireland Biodiversity Fund is now open for applications. There are two strands to this year’s grant round: community groups are invited to apply for a grant to engage an ecologist and develop a Community Biodiversity Action Plan (CBAP) for their local area. Residents Development Associations and Tidy Towns Groups who have a Community Biodiversity Action Plan can apply for funding to implement recommendations contained in it.

The grant round closes on Friday, October 25, at 4pm.

Partry AFC Stars

Congrats to Partry Athletic players Laoise Heneghan and Ruth Donnelly on being selected for the Mayo U12 squad. This is well deserved for two talented players that always give their best and have worked hard, showing great enthusiasm, skill and dedication over the past few years.

The girls had a great season with Partry Athletic U12s, winning the league and through to the cup final. Congratulations also to the U14 boys who clinched the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL U14 Division 2 title recently.

Under the 2024 Clár Measure 1 for Mayo, Grants were provided through the Department of Rural and Community Development by Minister Heather Humphreys for the projects which provide support for the development of community and sports facilities, youth clubs, playgrounds, sensory gardens, walking tracks, etc. Congrats to Partry Athletic AFC who received €10, 350 in the recent Clár Funding allocation.

The late Mary Kennedy

The death occurred last week of Mary Kennedy (nee Maughan) Dernacross, Breaffy, and late of Rathglass East, Killala Road, Ballina. Mary passed away on October 7, peacefully at her residence. Predeceased by her husband Paddy, her son Patrick, parents Michael and Ellen and brothers Mick, Martin and John, Mary is deeply regretted by her loving sons Oliver and Shane, daughter-in-law Sandra, brother James (Killala Road, Ballina), sister Evelyn (Devenney, Ballina), grandchildren Robyn, Cillian and Katlyn, sister-in-law Nellie (Reddington, Breaffy), nephews, niece, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincere condolences are tendered. Mary remains reposed at Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, on Wednesday, September 9, from 5.30pm with removal at 7pm to St. Aloysius Church, Breaffy. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday at 12 noon followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. May she rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.

Life Saving Advice

Belcarra Community Council has encouraged the local community and all road users to ‘Do the bright thing - Be Safe, Be Seen.’ As both morning and evenings get darker it is very difficult to see pedestrians and cyclists if they are not wearing high visibility clothing. If you are walking or cycling at any time of the day or night we encourage you the wear a high viz vest, use the footpaths where possible and always be aware of traffic.

Likewise motorists are encouraged to reduce speed on the roads and to always be vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists.There is great information on Road Safety Authority website www.rsa.ie for all road users, so please take a look.

Errew Centre official opening

Minister Alan Dillon officially opened Errew Community Centre on Friday, October 4, accompanied by Senator Lisa Chambers, Castlebar County Councillors and a large community gathering. Errew Community Committee extends their thanks and appreciation to everyone who attended and supported this very special event.

The former old Errew Girls’ NS has been converted into a modern small community centre. All enquiries for use contact errewcc@gmail.com.

Hospice fundraiser

Sincere thanks is extended to Errew community for generously supporting the first ever fundraiser in the newly refurbished Errew Community Centre. Catherine Hoban and Bernie Thomas extend their appreciation to everyone who attended their successful ‘Coffee for Hospice’ event. €1,175 was raised for our hugely valued local Hospice facility.

Clogher cards

Clogher Halloween event

On Sunday, October 27, the Clogher Environmental Group are organising a Halloween Tractor Run to start and finish at the community centre F12EK24. The entry fee is €20. Registration starts at 4pm and the run starts at 5pm. Afterwards there will be a mini tractor run for children and a free Halloween movie in the hall. There is a prize for the best decorated tractor so gather up your broomsticks, witches hats and Halloween lights as it will be a fun event. For further details contact Alan at 087 9032809.

Fr Ulick’s celebration

On a recent Sunday evening, Ballintubber GAA club organised an evening with Fr Ulick Bourke who is currently on vacation from Tenafly, New Jersey. Born in Newtown in 1936 Fr Ulick took the audience on a trip down memory lane as he recounted days walking to Clogher primary school, his school pals, collecting pennies for the African babies, his footballing days with Ballintubber Club. He spoke also of the different places where he served including Liberia where he ministered not only to the spiritual needs of the people but quite often he helped the people in practical ways with food, medicine and clothing. Back in the USA Fr Ulick served many ministries including Provincial Superior of the order in the US. Now retired he remains a Mayo Man to his finger tips and often enjoys a trip home to Newtown. He is wished well in all that he does into the future.
