Ballinrobe Community School suffer defeat in penalty shoot-out

The Ballinrobe Community School U20 girls’ soccer team were involved in an enthralling contest against Coláiste Chiaráin recently, in what was the Robesiders opening fixture of the new season. The match was played at a sunny venue in Athlone and both sides were full of endeavour throughout this cup tie.

The visitors made a positive start with Emily Jennings giving Ballinrobe an early lead. However, the Roscommon school regrouped impressively and levelled matters. The first half remained a keenly contested battle, but just before the break the Robesiders nudged in front. A marvellous delivery by Ursula Shaughnessy set-up Sari Vahey and the latter finished with aplomb.

Shaughnessy continued to pose problems for the Roscommon school and the industrious striker added a third for the Mayo outfit during the early stages of the new half. But Coláiste Chiaráin refused to wilt, and the hosts netted two quick-fire goals to level matters at 3-3.

This epic game continued to ebb and flow, and it appeared that Kate Brennan had secured a hard-fought victory for the south Mayo side when her tidy finish rustled the back of the net. However, a doughty home side responded impressively once again and they restored parity, which meant that extra-time was required to determine the outcome.

Neither side could muster a winner during extra-time and the dreaded penalty shoot-out was required. The Ballinrobe custodian Aoife Conroy produced some fine saves during the spot-kicks, however, the Roscommon side just about edged the shoot-out.

Overall, it was a game that could have gone either way and Ballinrobe can certainly be proud of their heroic efforts on the day.
