Renowned Mayo patriot to be remembered
The Michael Davitt Museum in Straide is one of Mayo's top tourism sites.
On Friday next, May 30th, a special wreath-laying ceremony will take place at Straide Cemetery to mark the anniversary of Michael Davitt, the founder of the Irish National Land League and one of Ireland’s most influential champions of social justice and land reform.
The ceremony, which takes place at 10am at Davitt’s graveside, will be led by Minister for Social Protection, Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary TD. All are warmly invited to attend and honour the legacy of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping modern Ireland.
Located beside Straide Cemetery, the Michael Davitt Museum is housed in the beautifully restored church where Davitt was baptised. It traces the extraordinary life of Michael Davitt - from his early years and forced emigration to his leadership in the Land League and global advocacy for social justice.
“Michael Davitt’s life story continues to inspire people from all over the world,” said Deirdre McGuirk, Manager of the Michael Davitt Museum. “This commemoration is a reminder not only of his immense contribution to Irish history, but of the values he stood for: dignity, fairness and social progress. We’re proud to welcome visitors to Straide to learn about his legacy.”
Offering engaging exhibitions, guided tours, and insight into one of Ireland’s most significant social movements, the Michael Davitt Museum is an important heritage attraction in a peaceful rural setting.
“The Michael Davitt Museum is a key part of Mayo’s cultural tourism offering,” said Mairéad Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism. “It provides a powerful insight into Ireland’s past and a real sense of place. We encourage both locals and visitors to explore it - and this upcoming commemoration is the perfect time to do so.”
The wreath-laying ceremony is open to all, and visitors are encouraged to stay and explore the museum afterwards. Light refreshments will be available following the event.
