Packed programme at the Linenhall in March

Mike Nielsen will host guitar lessons at the Linenhall Arts Centre in early March.

Among an exciting programme of events at the Linenhall Arts Centre in March is an illuminating visual arts exhibition by Dublin-based artist Cathy Dorman, which launches on Friday, March 1st, at 5pm.

'Step Away Closer' explores light and experience in site specific domestic spaces, challenging the viewer’s perception, shifting between representation and abstraction. Through model making, photography, paint and sculpture, Dorman investigates light within space, broken down into a series of planes. Dorman’s current work is focused on Rietveld Schröder House (Utrecht).

Formerly a practising architect, Dorman graduated in Fine Art from NCAD in 2020. Her first solo show titled ‘Domestic Planes’ took place at the Ashford Gallery, RHA, in 2022. Running in the lovely Linenhall gallery until Saturday, April 13th, all are welcome to view the exhibition, or attend the launch.

Taking to the Linenhall stage on Thursday, March 7th, is guitar aficionado Mike Nielsen. Guitarist, composer, educator and author, Mike is renowned for his innovative performances and research. His solo music, which includes original compositions, is performed on a classical guitar and influenced by jazz, classical, flamenco, Latin, African, Rock and Indian music. Nielsen has shared the stage with many international stars including Dave Liebman, Larry Coryell, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler, Dominique Di Piazza and Paul Wertico.

Earlier on the evening of March 7th, the Linenhall Arts Centre and Music Generation Mayo present a workshop, Navigating the Guitar Fretboard with Mike Nielsen, from 5 to 6pm for those aged under 18. The workshop promises to be an eye-opening experience for guitar enthusiasts of all levels, offering insights into tuning, fretboard template, essential theoretical knowledge, technique, chords, strumming, scales, keys and styles. Limited spaces are available, so early registration is advised.

Additional March highlights at the Linenhall include the official launch of the new novel  He Used to Be Me by Anne Walsh Donnelly, on Saturday, March 2nd; one-man bio-drama Trawled, written and performed by Eoin Ryan, on Friday, March 8th; and Clann Machua’s Stolen Childon Thursday, March 14th.
