Concert-filled weekend coming to Mayo town

The vibrant sounds of Ireland’s rich musical heritage will fill the streets of Belmullet this September.

The vibrant sounds of Ireland’s rich musical heritage will fill the streets of Belmullet this September as Trad ar an mBéal takes place for the first time, bringing a weekend of traditional music, song and dance.

Áras Inis Gluaire, in partnership with Comhaltas Craobh Iorrais, is proud to present a weekend filled with concerts, workshops, informal pub sessions and a lively street céilí, showcasing some of the finest local and visiting talent. Expect lively sessions in cosy pubs, captivating performances and high-energy céilí dancing that will have toes tapping.

The weekend begins on Friday 19th September, Culture Night, making it the perfect occasion to launch this new festival. The celebrations open with a Culture Night concert by the renowned Ox Mountain Trio – David Doocey, Stephen Doherty and Siobhán O’Donnell – in Áras Inis Gluaire at 8pm, followed by a late-night session in the Western Strands.

On Saturday 20th September, Áras Inis Gluaire will host a series of workshops (10am–1pm) in accordion, tin whistle, concertina, flute, guitar and singing for under 18’s. The day continues with Comhaltas na nÓg at the Western Strands Botanical Gardens at 1pm. A Cuimsiú Session will take place in Áras Inis Gluaire 2-3.30pm. Cuimsiú is an inclusive music session, children and young people of all abilities are warmly welcomed to join this relaxed and inclusive traditional music session created especially for those with a disability/ additional needs.

A harp workshop will be available for young people at 2pm followed by a harp ensemble performance at 4pm both in Áras Inis Gluaire. From 5pm, the town’s pubs will come alive with sessions running late into the night.

The festival closes on Sunday 21st September with a rousing Slán Abhaile Seisiún in O’D’s pub at 12.30pm, followed by a Belmullet Street Céilí from 3-4.30pm. This is a chance for the whole community and visitors to join in the music and dance.

Trad ar an mBéal is supported by Craobh Iorrais CCE, Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Culture Night and Áras Inis Gluaire. Admission to most events is free or low-cost, ensuring a warm welcome for all who wish to experience the best of Irish culture.
