Christmas in Mayo: A few events to take in during the festive season

With Christmas right around the corner, there is no shortage of events around Mayo. 

Whether you are looking to embrace the Yuletide spirit or shop for some last-minute Christmas gifts, check out this list of festive events around the county:

On November 16, Westport Estate transformed into a Winter Wonderland with a giant Christmas tree, the Wonderland Express and jolly old Santa Claus himself. Winter Wonderland at Westport Estate is operational until December 23. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy the magical atmosphere of Tinsel Town!

Áras Inis Gluaire is delighted to welcome Sensory Santa to Belmullet on Saturday (December 21). Sensory Santa offers people with autism and sensory disorders an opportunity to meet the big man in a peaceful environment. From 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sensory Santa will chat with families until his return to the North Pole.

A screening of a classic Christmas movie, Elf starring Will Ferrell, will take place on December 21 at 3:00 p.m. in the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. For only €7, join Buddy as he explores New York City and reconnects with his father.

Carols by Candlelight will take place on Sunday (December 22) at 8:00 p.m. at Knock Shrine. Featuring Schola Cantorum Basilicae and Knock Youth Choir with musical accompaniment by the Con Tempo string quartet and pianist Mark Keane, the joyous evening will be free of charge.

On Sunday (December 22) at 8:00 p.m., the Chapel Street Gospel Choir presents a Special Christmas Performance. On this evening, the Christ Church in Castlebar will be vibrant with soulful melodies from beloved holiday classics and gospel favourites. Tickets can be purchased online for €20.

The Westport Town Hall Theatre will celebrate its seventh annual pantomime with a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, however, has a big twist. With various performances between December 30 and January 4, there are many opportunities to see this unique rendition of the classic fairytale.
