‘Confusion’ over Mayo land rezoning
Cllr Cyril Burke.
Members of the public are unsure about the proposed variation of the Mayo County Development Plan for the purposes of opening up new residential development lands, a Castlebar councillor has stated.
Following a direction from the Department of Housing to zone new residential lands, Mayo County Council announced in September that it is to re-zone 195 hectares of Strategic Residential Reserve Tier 1 lands in the towns of Castlebar, Westport and Ballina, and increase housing targets in smaller towns, villages and settlements. The whole process will add 480 acres to the existing 333 acres of new residential development land, thereby varying the County Development Plan (CDP) 2022-2028.
Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke told management of Castlebar Municipal District at a meeting last week that there was some confusion.
“People are not clear does this apply to their land, if they have land that is designated as Strategic Reserve. Do they need to make a submission or will all the land so designated be included in the transition?”
Cathaoirleach Cllr Al McDonnell said he understood the variation applies to all land designated as Strategic Reserve.
Cllr Burke asked management could an update be provided for the next meeting clarifying the situation.
