Castlebar Mitchels have been announced as the recipients of a gold medal award from the GAA’s Joe McDonagh Foundation.
The Foundation supports clubs with the promotion and development of the Irish language which was established by the GAA and Glór na nGael in Joe’s memory.
Joe (1953-2016) achieved the highest position in the GAA, took the McCarthy Cup back to Galway as a hurler and was chief executive and chairman of some major organizations, including Foras na Gaeilge.
Mitchels PRO, Michael Baynes, said this is a great honour for the club and is a reflection of the dedication and commitment given by everyone who played their part for almost 12 months of the award process.
Irish officer, Padraic MacEoin, said that the award is an award for the whole community and wider.
“Everyone in our club took part, but we had to reach further than that by liaising and working with many community groups in Castlebar and across Mayo. No one said no to us. This award would not have been possible without the help of these people. It was true community spirit.”
There are over 2200 GAA clubs across the 32 counties with just six others outside of Castlebar Mitchels recipients of a gold medal, 3 of those in the Gaeltacht.
Members of Castlebar Mitchels travelled to Croke Park last Friday, December 1, to be presented with their medal.
