Work-to-rule is impacting hedgecutting works, councillor says

A series of hazards for motorists have been highlighted by members of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District at their monthly meeting.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Brendan Mulroy flagged difficulties with the traffic lights at the Castlecourt Hotel in Westport and the left filter lane sign, that he said comes on in a way that people think it means to go straight ahead".

“I have seen people take off at the junction and have to stop again.”

Cllr John O’Malley said the pedestrian crossings at James Street in Westport were highly dangerous with many near misses.

Cllr Paul McNamara complained that the council owns no proper machinery for fixing potholes while hedgecutting was being affected by the current work-to-rule by workers, adding: “While we fully support workers there is no machinery or anyone cleaning the drains."

Area engineer Heather Gibbons confirmed that all emergency callouts are being dealt with.
