Work to begin in January on extension to Blacksod trail

An extension to the Blacksod Bay walking and cycling loop is expected to be complete by summer 2026.

The extension of the Blacksod Bay Loop Project has been warmly welcomed.

Erris councillors Gerry Coyle and Sean Carey are enthused that funding for the second phase of the project (the Doohoma Phase) has been secured.

The Blacksod Bay Loop Project is an ambitious initiative to create a scenic cycling and walking route through the heart of North Mayo. The route will traverse Blacksod Bay, connecting communities and showcasing the region’s stunning beauty.

Cllrs Carey and Coyle have confirmed funding has been secured for the Doohoma Phase with construction commencing in January 2026. It is expected to be completed by summer next year.

“We have both pushed for this local investment which for this phase comes to over €1.5 million secured from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). It is fantastic news and will help create a most important and safe shared space for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” said Cllr Coyle.

“This builds on the great work already nearing completion around the Binghamstown/Cross area, an investment of €1m we had secured in the infrastructure of that area, and called on the TII to now progress the subsequent phases on either side of the bay, the sum total of which could exceed €30m,” said Cllr Carey.

The councillors commended the National Roads Design Office, and the Belmullet area office, and all staff for their efforts.

They said the project will be an incredible addition to the area which can be enjoyed by both visitors and locals.
