A considerable volume of works to address damage at Drummin Woods caused by Storm Eowyn earlier this year will result in a week-long road closure in north Mayo.

Cllr Neil Cruise told last week’s meeting of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District he recently met with the estates manager of Coillte who said damage caused by the once-in-a-century storm last January in Drummin Woods would need to be addressed.

Cllr Cruise said Coillte wish to go in and fell dangerous trees in the area but this would require a week-long road closure on the R318 from Foxford Train Station to the t-junction turning onto the R310 at Pontoon. Coillte are hoping to complete the works in early September.

“I have received correspondence from local residents about this area as well and it behooves us to do this,” he said.

“There are considerable safety works required and would require the closure of this road to facilitate the works.”

Head of the MD Padraig Flanagan told Cllr Cruise to contact the area engineer to begin this process, which would require advertising the road closure in advance. Mr Flanagan said this process would take around three weeks and advised Cllr Cruise to contact the engineer as soon as possible.
