Liverpool FC midfielder Alexis Mac Allister paid tribute to Foxford's recent 'Argentina Day' by sending the town a signed jersey.
Last weekend, Foxford honoured the legacy of Admiral William Brown - the founding father of the Argentine Navy.
Admiral Brown was born in Foxford on June 22, 1777, as this year's event commemorated the 247th anniversary of his birth.
The Argentine Navy has a long history of visiting Foxford, which has fostered warm relations with the local community.
In 1957, to commemorate the centenary of Admiral Brown’s death, Argentina gifted a bronze bust of the admiral to Foxford. This tradition of camaraderie continued in 2022 when the Argentine Ambassador welcomed the crew of the ARA Libertad to Foxford. The ARA Libertad, one of the largest sailing ships in the world at 103 meters long, graced the waters of Killala Bay.
Adding to these celebrations, the Admiral William Brown Society in Foxford launched the innovative ‘Admiral Brown Heritage Trail.’ This initiative was soon followed by an Argentinian club, Guillermo Brown de Puerto Madryn, making headlines with a distinctive jersey honouring Admiral Brown.
The Mayo town will now have a signed Argentina jersey from one of the top midfield talents in professional football.
Mac Allister joined the Reds from Brighton last summer and made an impact at Anfield last season - scoring seven goals during his debut campaign on Merseyside.
The 25-year-old World Cup winner, who is currently at the Copa América with his country in the United States, also has Irish heritage with family roots from Donabate in Dublin.
