Utilities companies come in for criticism from Mayo Cllr

One of the problem locations identified by Cllr Ger Deere.

A Castlebar councillor has criticised the behaviour of utilities companies in the area.

“We are sick to the teeth of utilities companies who when they put down manholes or chambers they don’t finish around them,” Cllr Ger Deere told a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

He said Mayo County Council are left carrying the can as a result.

“It’s left up to the council to cover that cost. It’s going on for years and years. Eircom in particular, are making millons every week and we have a particular case in Ballyvary. I’d say for the last eight to 10 years, Eircom put down chambers and manholes and the state they left around them is unbelievable, for cyclists for walkers and even for cars,” said Cllr Sheridan.

He said action needs to be taken to prevent this from happening again.

“When are we going to start clamping down on these utilities companies? And get them to finish these jobs. We have to cover the cost of it and it’s absolutely ridiculous. We have to get tough and put in a bond. If there is an accident as a result it will come back on our insurance. It’s time we got tough on these utilities companies. I’m absolutely fed up of it,” said Cllr Deere.

“It’s absolutely lethal what’s going on. Enough is enough,” he added.

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne suggested doubling the bond to prevent these issues.
