The recent visit of the American ambassador to Belmullet proved a great success and should lead to a boost in tourism, a meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District heard.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Sean Carey said the visit in early September should prove beneficial for tourism.
“She was amazed with the beautiful facilities and amenities and the scenery and so many came out to meet her. It was a great occasion.”
Cllr Gerry Coyle said that the ambassador’s husband played golf and “is to come back to play in Carne [in Belmullet] and has accepted a challenge to play former Taoiseach Enda Kenny". He added that she had been told the "whole history of the emigration and the great story of Blacksod Lighthouse and was very impressed".
Cllr Coyle thanked all who attended and council members and staff who came down for the presentations.
