Concerns are growing over the amount of time it is taking to start the long-awaited improvement works on Roonagh Pier in West Mayo, a meeting of Mayo County Council has heard.
Louisburgh-based Cllr Chris Maxwell raised the matter at the October meeting of the local authority, stating: “People are getting restless, the islanders are getting restless, because they have been promised the emergency repair works would start in September, but it still hasn’t happened. The two ferry operators there did tremendous work over the summer keeping everything going and they deserve to know when work will start. Has a contractor even been appointed?”
The council's Director of Services David Mellett, who is also serving as Head of Marine at the moment, confirmed that emergency works have not started at Roonagh Pier but that a consultant will be on site within the next two weeks to carry out further investigations to inform the design.
Mr Mellett added: “We have shortlisted the contractor list and we are very committed to having the work done for the 2027 season and the two ferry operators have been fantastic to work with over the last few months in the way they have managed the traffic on the pier.”
