Mayo monument 'on verge of collapse'

The Mayo Peace Park wall is 'on the verge of collapse'.

The Peace Park monument in Castlebar is on the verge of collapse and its demise would be a complete insult to the families of the fallen soldiers commemorated, a local councillor has claimed.

Cllr Harry Barrett told the October meeting of Mayo County Council that the collapse of the monument would be "a national disgrace". He told the council chief executive Kevin Kelly: “I want an answer on this. I already called for Minister for the Office of Public Works Kevin Boxer Moran to be written to and for it to be brought under the Office of Public Works as a listed monument. It has to be restored immediately before collapsing as if that happens it will be a shocking embarrassment.”
