Tributes have been paid to retiring Mayo Garda Superintendent Gabriel Moran.

Supt Moran retires from his post as Superintendent for Mayo South with Supt Brian Hoey set to take his place.

The Aghagower native served with the Metropolitan Police in London and the PSNI in Belfast prior to joining An Garda Síochána and swiftly climbed the ranks.

At a meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee, Chief Supt Ray McMahon praised Supt Moran for his efforts in the county over the past five years.

“A thorough professional of the highest integrity,” said the Chief Supt.

Local councillors were also fulsome in their praise for Supt Moran and the work he carried out in the county.

"I want to acknowledge the work and close co-operaration of Supt Gabriel Moran," said Cllr Damien Ryan. " I want to thank him for his time and dedication," he added.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here,” said Chief Supt Moran.

Retiring Det Sgt Jim Caden was also wished well on his retirement after 38 years on the force. Det Sgt Caden previously headed up the Mayo Drugs Unit during his time in Ballina.

Cllr Michael Loftus said when Det Sgt Caden arrived in the county from Dublin he was ‘gung ho’ and maintained that attitude throughout his career.
