Ballina and surrounds residents encouraged to engage with new affordable housing survey

A local councillor is encouraging people in Ballina and surrounding areas to register their interest in affordable housing as part of a survey being conducted by Mayo County Council.

The survey will gauge the level of demand for affordable housing in Ballina, which will help inform future housing schemes.

“In January 2026, we welcomed the news that Ballina was finally deemed eligible for affordable housing," said Cllr Marie Therese Duffy. "As we move to the next step, I encourage anyone who is interested in affordable housing to complete the survey to register their interest before April 10.

“If the number of responses is low, it may be assumed there is not a strong demand locally. Based on the number of people contacting me about this, demand is high.”

The councillor noted upcoming housing developments in Ballina, including the imminent construction of 83 housing units on the Killala Road at the former Cheshire Home site.

While these units are currently earmarked as social housing, Cllr Duffy said she is pushing for 50% of the units to be designated as affordable homes, offering houses at reduced prices for working families and individuals.

In addition, she is calling for cost-rental apartments to be included in the 31-unit development at the former Duffy’s Bakery site near Ballina Bus Station, creating mixed developments including both social and affordable housing options.

All details about the survey can be found on the Mayo County Council website at www.mayo.ie.
