Ballinrobe Town continued their pursuit of table toppers Ballina Town after the Robesiders recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Snugboro United, on Wednesday night last, at Milebush Park.
Ballinrobe enjoyed the majority of possession during the opening exchanges, and they eventually found the breakthrough on 10 minutes, when JP O’Gorman’s curling free kick flew to the back of the Snugboro net. Snugboro could well have levelled matters just before the break, but the Ballinrobe netminder Paul Tiernan produced a top-drawer save. The Town could have extended their lead during the second half, with James O’Malley and O’Gorman unlucky not to find the target.
With just 10 minutes of normal time remaining, a resolute United managed to conjure up the equaliser. An excellent cross from John McCarthy was guided to the back of the net by the poaching Colin Corrigan, and Ballinrobe’s title bid appeared to be on the verge of a set-back.
However, the red and white didn’t panic and with full-time on the horizon the south Mayo men netted what proved to be the winning goal. Aidan Higgins and O’Gorman combined with telling effect and despite the latter’s effort being parried by the Snugboro ‘keeper, Ballinrobe’s Damian O’Toole was on hand to guide the rebound to the back of the net. Ballinrobe closed out proceedings impressively and they remain in the hunt for the league title ahead of their final game of the season against Ballyheane tomorrow night (Wednesday). That tie against Ballyheane will take place in Milebush Park and is scheduled to kick-off at 8.30pm. Your support for the red and white would be appreciated.
