Tributes to Mayo nun and hospice nurse who was an 'angel in disguise'

Tributes have poured in following the passing of a Mayo nun described as ‘an angel from Heaven.’ 

Sr Mary Murphy (Mary Kate) was a native of Aughleam, Blacksod and resided in Castlebar.

She is fondly remembered by the Árd Bhríde community, and the Sisters of Mercy Western Branch with whom she shared life for 60 years.

She was one of the first palliative care nurses in Mayo and her kindness and compassion left a mark on so many lives.

“Her care and kindness was exceptional as she prepared her patients for their final journey. I'm sure they will all be waiting to welcome her into her new Heavenly home. Rest in peace lovely lady,” read a message of sympathy.

“Mary was full of joy and happiness spreading it everywhere she went. Her infectious personality and wonderful sense of humour lifted the hearts and souls of everyone she encountered. There is no doubt she had the right vocation,” stated another.

Sr Mary travelled the entire county helping the sick and their families.

“We got to know her many years ago when my Dad was sick. Dad called Mary his angel in disguise. A fabulous person,” said a family member.

“To me she was a saint,” said another message of sympathy.

Sr Mary is reunited in her heavenly home with her parents, Sabina and Pat, brothers John Christopher and Paddy, sister-in-law Isobel, her niece Maureen and the deceased Sisters of Mercy.

She is deeply mourned by her nieces Dearbhla, Mary and Debbie, nephews Anthony, John Joe and Dennis, sister-in-law Deborah, grandnieces and her many friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Reposal takes place at Árd Bhríde, Castlebar, tomorrow (Thursday) from 3.30pm to 5pm. Arrival at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Friday for Mass of the Resurrection at 11.30am. Burial in Faulmore Cemetery, Aughleam, Blacksod, Belmullet.
