Louis Walsh would 'love to do a record' with All-Ireland-winning Mayo team

Mayo music mogul Louis Walsh has revealed he would "love to do a record" with the county's All-Ireland-winning senior football team.

The Kiltimagh native made the comment during an appearance on the 2 Johnnies Podcast, where he reflected on his career in the music industry and discussed Mayo's historic Sam Maguire triumph.

When asked if he watched this year's final, Walsh said he had and admitted he would be interested in working with the champions on a song.

"I’d love to do a record with the Mayo team," he said.

While the former X Factor judge stopped short of naming a particular track, he hinted that it would be a “hit song”.

When host Johnny O'Brien joked that he wasn’t sure how many of the team could sing, Walsh simply replied that “it doesn’t matter”.

During the summer of homecoming celebrations that followed the All-Ireland triumph, fans across the county were treated to karaoke renditions of the players' favourite songs. The performances became somewhat of a tradition.

Mayo captain Jack Coyne belted out ‘Joxer Goes to Stuttgart’, while Tommy Conroy performed ‘The Dog Days Are Over’ and vice-captain Darren McHale had crowds singing along to ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Aidan O'Shea also gave a memorable rendition of ‘The River’ in Castlebar, and Ryan O'Donoghue put a Mayo spin on Milky's 2002 hit ‘Just the Way You Are’, changing the lyrics to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant.

Walsh is one of Ireland's most successful music managers, having helped guide acts including Westlife, Boyzone, Girls Aloud and Jedward to chart-topping success, accumulating 28 number-one singles and 16 number-one albums.

He spent 13 years as a judge on The X Factor, where he became known for his famous catchphrase - ‘you look like a popstar, you sound like a popstar, you are a popstar’.

He is currently co-managing Westlife as the group celebrates its 25th anniversary with a world tour that included a 13-night run at Dublin's 3Arena.

Speaking on the podcast, Walsh said his greatest strength has always been in promotion and in choosing hit songs.

"I think that is my best talent, if I am really honest with you, picking songs," he said.
