Tributes flood in as Claremorris says a fond farewell to one of its most iconic stores

Smyth's newsagents and bookstore in Claremorris is to close later this week after 88 years.
There has been an outpouring of sadness on social media following the news that an iconic and much-loved Mayo shop is to close its doors for the final time at the end of the week.
Smyths Newsagents & Bookstore in Claremorris, known locally as ‘Little Smyths’, announced last Tuesday morning that it will close after almost 90 years in business.
The shop, which is located on Main Street, has been in operation since 1935 and was the birthplace of the multi-billion euro company Smyths Toy Superstores. A closing down sale is now underway.
“After almost 90 years trading it comes with great sadness to announce the closure of Smyths Newsagents (or little Smyths as it was often referred to),” the store wrote on social media. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers, neighbours and friends for their custom and support over the years. We would also like to thank all our staff for their commitment and contribution to the business. Míle Buíochas. The Smyth Family.”
Smyth’s was a cherished establishment in Claremorris as generations of local families visited the store.
Popularly known as ‘Little Smyths’, it was ahead of its time from selling toys and books to sweets and delicious 99s, and its closure will leave a gaping hole in the heart of Claremorris.
Claremorris Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to the store.
“Thank you for the ice cream cones, the lollies, the penny sweets, the chocolate bars, the handy pint of milk, the comics, the crisps, the books, the Sunday newspapers, the school books, the toys, the teddies, the barbies, the action men, the cots and the prams, not forgetting Birdie’s St Brigid’s Day crosses and the games of the cards in the back bar with Paddy.
“To all the wonderful staff who have worked there over the years - thank you. Main Street and Claremorris will never be the same... but the dream lives on.”
Staff at the Claremorris Family Resource Centre also expressed sadness at the news.
“A great business in the town for many years - will be hugely missed. All the best to all at ‘Little Smyths’ - to all the Smyth families and Smyths staff - all the very best for the future,” they wrote.
Smyths’ neighbours Flynn’s Pharmacy Claremorris said they were truly saddened by the news.
“Little Smyths’ presence on Main Street will be missed dearly. Thanks so much and best wishes to all the Smyth staff. We have treasured memories of the Smyth family and just want to say how grateful we are to have had such great neighbours for so long.”
One man said he was proud to explain to his German friends that the Smyths in his hometown originally came from Claremorris, where he has lived since 2006.
“I’ve been in this town since 2006 I feel like part of it. My mother lives in Würselen in Germany. I was so proud to explain to German friends that the shop they have in Würselen is coming from Claremorris and is real history. I’m really sad that this part of Claremorris will close down. But I also wish Syith family best of luck in future,” he said.
One woman said it was truly the end of an era for the town.
“Smyth’s was my first job and the best employers all the way from transition year to finishing college.
“So many great laughs and memories with good friends made. So many good memories of times past. A huge loss to the town and a fantastic employer and a first start for many generations of young people.”
Another man commented: “Main St will never be the same, great memories made, great friends made and Santa Claus’ favourite stop.
“Soon to be gone but never forgotten.”
