Council to allocate €100,000 for popular tourist area in West Mayo

Mayo County Council is to allocate €100,000 to fund a masterplan for the Quay area in Westport.
Cathaoirleach of Westport Belmullet MD Cllr Brendan Mulroy made the announcement at the July meeting of the forum. Cllr Mulroy said he and three other West Mayo-based councillors - John O’Malley, Chris Maxwell and Peter Flynn - had held meetings with the chief executive of the council Kevin Kelly on the matter.
"He has said he will be allocating €100,000 for a masterplan for the Quay, which is brilliant. This will be a gamechanger for this very popular and iconic tourist spot, and my three colleagues and I extend our sincere thanks for this award.”
Cllr Peter Flynn said it is a significant announcement that will set the Quay up for a transformation, adding that even the small investment to develop the swimming area at the Point has already seen it become a focal point, not just for Westport, but for people from all over the county. However, he added that the general Quay area itself was “a mess”, with campervans and people coming in on ferries, saying: “We need to figure out a structure and whatever grants can be drawn down so that we can then start to make real progress.”
Cllr John O’Malley said he was delighted with the funding announcement but hoped that the plan to develop a marina at the Quay also remains on the table.
Cllr Chris Maxwell said it was great that some work will be started and that this will lead to the Quay progressing to its full potential.
