Traffic safety fears near Mayo funeral home

Councillors have been highlighting safety issues on Emmet Street in Ballina.
A Ballina councillor has said he has ‘little faith’ that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will act upon the traffic safety problems on Emmet Street in the town.
Independent Cllr Mark Duffy told a meeting of the local municipal district that more needs to be done to improve pedestrian safety in Ballina, with Emmet Street a particular blackspot in the town as there is a funeral home on the street.
Orla Bourke, senior engineer in the district, said Emmet Street is currently included in the TII's HD15 programme and the Mayo Roads Design Office is completing a feasibility and options study at present. This will lead to a final design which may include a raised crossing and it is anticipated that works will be delivered in 2024.
“I have little faith in TII for how they deal with urban centres on their routes,” said Cllr Duffy. “These safety issues are becoming a regular issue on Emmet Street.”
Cllr Annie May Reape had called on the municipal district to take immediate steps to calm traffic in the Emmet Street area, such as installing speed ramps.
“It is getting worse all the time and it comes up time and time again. Whenever there is a funeral, it is so, so dangerous around there,” she said.
