Mayo motorists face disruption as 16-week road closure begins along N58
The section of the N58 will be closed until 5pm on Friday, December 4.
Major disruption is expected on the Mayo road network between Ballyvary and Foxford following the closure of the N58 to facilitate bridge replacement works in Straide.
The closure came into effect at 8am yesterday and will remain in place until 5pm on Friday, December 4, 2026.
The affected section of the N58 runs form its junction with the N5 at Ballyvary to its junction with the R321 in Ballylahan.
A section of the L17148 traversing the Masonry Arch Bridge only, adjacent to the bridge replacement works, has also been closed.
A diversion route has been put in place along the R321 from its junction with the N58 at Ballylahan to its junction with the N5 at Bohola, and along the N5 to its junction with the N58 at Ballyvary.
Local access to properties in the area and to the Michael Davitt Museum is in place.
The closures have been put in place to facilitate the replacement of the Straide River Bridge.
Permission was granted to Mayo County Council by An Coimisiún Pleanála in March for the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
The works will involve replacing the existing bridge deck with a new single-span deck and aim to improve the load-carrying capacity and structural integrity of the crossing.
The lengthy closure will affect traffic travelling between Ballyvary, Straide and Foxford for the duration of the works.
Motorists are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and follow the signed diversion route.
