‘The Green and Red of Mayo’ has been ringing in the ears of most Mayo fans since Sunday and Saw Doctors’ ode to the county has shot to the top of the Spotify charts.
The Galway band’s song boomed around Croke Park at the final whistle of the All-Ireland Final and was sung wholeheartedly by thousands at last night’s homecoming in Castlebar.
The anthem now tops the Spotify charts in Ireland more than 30 years after its original release.
'The Green and Red of Mayo’ was written in 1990 after the band had played a festival on Clare Island, off Mayo.
“It was beautiful weather, a cloudless, warm sunny day,” Ollie Jennings, the band’s manager, told The Journal. “We started writing a poem on the boat with Gerry Mulholland. Davy put music to it, and we had a song shortly afterwards.”
