Swinford cyclist takes on immense charity challenge

Eugene Greaney will cycle from Belfast to Enniscrone braving forests, mountains and rugged coastlines to raise money for charity on June 21.

A Swinford man is to undergo an incredible cycle spanning over 200 miles on the longest day of the year.

Eugene Greaney will take on the ‘Chase the Sun’ challenge from Belfast to Enniscrone, a distance of 209 miles (336km), from sunrise at 4.46am to sunset at 10.13pm on Saturday, June 21.

Eugene told the Western People he chose to take on this immense challenge in memory of Ronan Hynes of Knocknacarra, Galway, who sadly passed away in June 2024. All funds raised will go to Jigsaw, the national centre for youth mental health.

“Jigsaw provides vital support to young people aged 12-25 across Ireland who are struggling with their mental health,” explained Eugene. “They offer a safe, non-judgmental space where young people can talk, be heard, and feel less alone."

He said the work done by organisations like Jigsaw is critical in the world of today.

"Their work is life-changing and now, more than ever, it’s urgently needed. If you're going through a tough time, please know you're not alone. Reach out. Talk to someone. Help is always available.”

Eugene will be joined by his friends Pat Thompson and Vincent Armstrong from Swinford Cycling Club.

“It is not just a test of endurance and determination, it is a celebration of adventure. There’s no doubt the journey will have its challenges, but the knowledge that I’m raising funds for such an incredible charity will keep me going when I need that extra boost,” said Eugene. “Cycling has always been a true passion of mine and I look forward to the challenge.”
