'Someone will be killed' by speeding motorists in Mayo town

Cllr Michael Loftus

A local councillor has described some of the speeding occurring around Crossmolina as “absolute lunacy.” Cllr Michael Loftus told last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District that he observed a serious case of speeding while parked up outside Crossmolina graveyard on the N59 recently.

He said he saw a white BMW car driving past him at ‘around 120kmh. Cllr Loftus said he has received similar complaints from other local residents.

“We want something to slow down this speed. This was at a 60kmh zone coming into a 50kmh zone, it is absolute lunacy,” he said.

He said there are similar problems at the other end of Crossmolina outside the GAA grounds.

“It is the same at the Deel Rovers grounds. Cars are coming out of Deerpark estate and cars are flying into town from the right and out from the left,” he said.

He reiterated previous calls he has made for a pedestrian crossing at this location and said he fears that someone will be killed in this area without adequate traffic calming measures.

“People will say enforcement but it is not up to the Gardaí to sort this out. I was absolutely gob smacked by the speed of that car.” Cllr Annie-May Reape supported his comments.

“Cars drive so quick in that area, you can’t even make our their number plate,” she said.

Assistant engineer Vincent O’Boyle said speed surveys would be carried out in Crossmolina in the near future.
