Sad passing of much-loved young Mayo man
Huge crowds attended the funeral of the popular young Castlebar man.
Castlebar remains enveloped in sadness following the passing of Eamonn Conway.
The huge crowds that attended Eamonn’s funeral mass and reposal was testament to the love and esteem felt in the community for Eamonn and the Conway family.
Eamonn, aged 39, of Carrabeag, Newport Road, Castlebar and formerly of Ballinaglough, Snugboro, was an immensely popular young man.
A cherished staff member of Conway Motors, Eamonn was a talented soccer player who was synonymous with Snugbroro United. Eamonn also starred for Castlebar Celtic as an underage player and represented Castlebar Mitchels in his youth.
“Eamonn played for our club for many years, and when he played, he played with passion for his beloved Boro.
"That passion undoubtedly came from the deep roots the Conway family have in our club. From the very early days, when his father Edward was heavily involved in the formation of the club, right up to today with Eamonn’s brother Padraic serving as the current chairperson, the Conway family’s commitment has remained strong,” said Snugboro United in tribute to Eamonn.
"There is no doubt that Eamonn’s spirit will live on through his family and all who knew him,” the club added.
“Eamonn will be remembered fondly for his talent on the pitch, his dedication and the warm, genuine spirit he brought to every training session and match. He made many friends here, and his loss will be felt by all who knew him,” said Castlebar Celtic in tribute to Eamonn.
A guard of honour was provided by Snugboro United and Castlebar Mitchels as family and friends bade farewell to their beloved Eamonn and the colours of both clubs were on display at Eamonn's funeral on Saturday.
Predeceased by his parents Edward and Teresa Conway and uncle-in-law Jimmy Munnelly, Eamonn is deeply mourned by his heartbroken family, brother Padraic, sisters Rosemary, Tracy, Gillian and Deirdre, sister-in-law Caroline, brothers-in-law, Declan, Ciaran, Mark and Tadhg, aunts Margaret (Dodo Munnelly), Maura and Helena, uncles P.J Conway and Declan, beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts in-law, uncles in-law, neighbours, relatives and a large circle of friends.
There were moving tributes to Eamonn at his funeral mass at the Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar.
Eamonn's brother Padraic and sisters Rosemary, Tracy, Gillian, and Deirdre spoke tenderly of his devotion to his family and friends and the incredible love he had for his 16 nephews and nieces. His niece Ella said 'Eamo' was the world's best uncle.
The Mass heard of his talents and exploits on the sporting field and the intelligence and ability he displayed in his career at Conway Motors. Mourners were told of the joy that Eamonn brought to all who knew him and the incredible mark he made in his local community.
Gifts brought to the altar reflected Eamonn’s love of family, sport, music, and travel. Parish priest Fr Conal Eustace said “words were insufficient” when a loss so great occurs. Eamonn was laid to rest in the New Cemtery, Castlebar.
