Road Safety Week 2025 is launched in Mayo

Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Office is marking Road Safety Week 2025, which takes place from today (Monday, October 6) and continues until Sunday, October 12. The annual event is dedicated to promoting road safety awareness and advocating for safer roads and responsible driving behaviour.
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Seán Carey: said: “Road safety remains one of the major priorities for everyone in Mayo County Council. We need to do everything we can to educate and increase awareness about keeping everyone safe on our roads - that goes for everyone including pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and e-scooter users across the county."
Mayo Road Safety Officer Frances Mitchell spoke about the importance of the week in getting the road safety message across to everyone in the county.
“There has been a welcomed reduction in the number of fatalities in County Mayo to date, however, it is important to note that these numbers are still too high and it is critical that we do not become complacent when it comes to road safety.
“Road Safety is not just a rulebook – it’s a responsibility we all share.”

The show heard from several guests including Cathaoirleach, Cllr Seán Carey; council chief executive Kevin Kelly; Garda Inspector David Tiernan, Mayo/Roscommon/Longford Roads Policing; Sarah Togher, Local Link Mayo; Hayley Coleman, road traffic accident survivor; , Lukasz Krzywon, An Taisce and Mayo Road Safety Officer, Frances Mitchell.To mark Road Safety Week, Mayo Road Safety Office in collaboration with Mayo Older Persons' Council and Mayo Local Community Safety Partnership are organising the ‘Active Living & Safe Driving: A Community Event’ in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, on Wednesday, October 8, from 9.30am to 1.30pm. This is a free event and there will be a number of guest speakers from the Road Safety Authority, Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo Fire Service and An Garda Siochána. Free high visibility vests will be available to the public along with road safety information leaflets in the reception area of Aras an Chontae for the duration of Road Safety Week.
