Road in Mayo town will be closed for a year
The closure is in order to facilitate further works on a flood relief scheme.
A stretch of road in Crossmolina will be closed for almost a year in order to facilitate flood relief works in the town.
Mayo County Council say part of Chapel Road will be closed to traffic to allow for works on the River Deel Flood Relief Scheme.
The closure will be place from October 1 this year, until September 30, 2027.
Chapel Road runs parallel with the River Deel and provides access to Crossmolina National School and St Tiernan’s Church.
Mayo County Council say an official diversion route will be established via the L1105, L5154, R316, R315 and N59.
The €34 million project aims to "future proof" an area which has been devastated by floods for decades.
In 2006, flood waters wreaked havoc in the town with dozens of homes and businesses destroyed.
It was not the first extreme flood event to happen and this devastating scenario was repeated again in 2015. On that occasion 120 properties were inundated with water.
There have been ongoing calls for flood alleviation measures in Crossmolina for years.
