Residents unhappy over works on 'lethal' Mayo road
The works have caused concern to householders in the area.
Mayo County Council has been criticised over a lack of communication with residents over works at a ‘lethal’ section of road.
The junction at the Breaffy end of Balloor is to be narrowed as part of the Breaffy Active Travel Scheme but local homeowners are not happy.
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said residents have long highlighted the dangerous section but have been left disgruntled with the attitude of Mayo County Council. He said a recent meeting between residents and the council’s road design office was unsatisfactory.
“They don’t seem to know that part of their brief is to communicate with people. They didn’t do it on the N5, no consultation with people.” “It wasn’t explained to people about this junction and what it was going to be like,” said Cllr Kicoyne. His proposal for a site meeting with council engineers was backed by his fellow councillors.
Cllr Ger Deere said resident’s worries need to be listened to. "They’re just not happy with that whole set-up out there. It certainly needs to be looked at. There are real concerns. That road has been notorious. Every meeting we bring it up about speed, they are petrified and this is adding to it. It needs clarifification. There seems to be bad communication in that regard,” said Cllr Deere.
“It’s just unbelievable the way people are being treated. It’s not good enough,” added Cllr Blackie Gavin.
