Pyrite scheme criteria are 'absolute lunacy'

Many homes in Mayo have had to be rebuilt due to pyrite damage.
An Erris-based councillor has queried why homeowners with pyrite have to apply for planning permission to to rebuild their properties.
Fine Gael Cllr Gerry Coyle, who first highlighted the problem of pyrite in Mayo properties a decade ago, told last week's meeting of Mayo County Council that planning permission should not be required a second time.
“The pyrite scheme was never one for engineers to make millions out of but for the people to get proper housing," he remarked. "Why do they have to go for planning if it is state money that is paying for the rebuilding?"
Cllr Coyle also questioned the strict regulations around the scheme.
"Some want to downsize but are being told they have to build it back as they were. This is absolute lunacy.”
