Public toilet proposal for popular South Mayo site

A local councillor has said public toilets are being sought by people using the playground beside Clare Lake in Claremorris and has suggested that a trial private portaloo arrangement be put in place over the summer holidays next year to help parents and children.

Aontú Cllr Deirdre Lawless raised the issue at the October meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.

“These are huge amenities and an awful lot of people are coming to enjoy them but a child can’t wait when they need to go to the toilet.”

Municipal district head Padraig Flanagan said the council would be willing to trial a portaloo arrangement, telling Cllr Lawless: “They would need to be included in the budget, if you can make a case. There are difficulties associated with portaloos and it isn’t straightforward, but if they are not working they can get taken away again. So if we can get the budget in the first place that would be the route to take.”
