'Proud day' as new homes opened in Mayo

Minister of State Alan Dillon TD today officially opened three housing developments in Ballyvary, Castlebar and Carnacon, and turned the sod on phase three at Lios na Circa, Castlebar, comprising of 37 high quality energy efficient homes.

Together, these 62 homes will provide an investment of more than €20 million.

Minister Dillon formally opened 12 new homes in Ballyvary; 4 new apartments at Lower Charles Street, Castlebar and 9 new homes in Carnacon.

Speaking at the openings, Minister Dillon said: “Today is a proud day for Mayo. These 25 new high spec homes, together with the 37 now moving to construction, show the real, tangible progress being made in delivering high quality, affordable homes for people across the county.

I want to acknowledge the exceptional work of Mayo County Council, who continue to lead from the front in delivering housing that strengthens our towns, villages and rural communities.” 

He added that the developments “reflect the Government’s commitment to ensuring every part of Ireland benefits from sustained housing investment, not just our major cities.” Significant momentum continues in Castlebar, where 77 new social homes are progressing at Lawn Road and Ellison Street, alongside a 200 home mixed tenure development planned for Knockthomas. Minister Dillon also confirmed that refurbishment of three derelict properties at Barrack Bridge end will further enhance Lower Charles Street.

This week, the Minister announced 35 new affordable homes in Snugboro as part of a wider 99 home development, marking the first affordable purchase scheme in Castlebar.

Concluding, Minister Dillon thanked local communities, councillors, contractors and Mayo County Council staff for their collaboration: “These homes will change lives. They will ensure families can remain rooted in the place they call home and help young people put down roots in their own communities. This is what housing delivery is all about.”
