Planning application submitted for multi-million euro Mayo water project
The proposed Carrowteigue Community Water Connection project hopes to bring safe drinking water to homes across Carrowteigue, Porturlin, Portacloy and Srahataggle.
A planning application has been submitted for a €2.1 million infrastructure project hopes to bring a piped water supply to almost 200 households in North Mayo.
The proposed Carrowteigue Community Water Connection project received funding under the 2025 Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme and aims to provide treated, safe drinking water to homes across Carrowteigue, Porturlin, Portacloy and Srahataggle.
Currently, 198 households in the area are without a piped water supply.
The proposed works include the installation of approximately 1km of 90mm OD water trunk main, extending from the junction of Portacloy Road and the R314 into Portacloy village.
A further 6.2km of 90mm OD water trunk main is proposed, extending from the junction of the Porturlin Road and L5246 into Porturlin village and continuing to the village of Srahataggle.
The project also includes approximately 13.8km of 63mm OD water distribution mains to supply homes in Carrownaglogh, Carrowteigue, Portacloy, Porturlin and Srahataggle.
Associated temporary works will also be required to facilitate access to the sites. These include vegetation clearance, the disassembly and reassembly of gate posts and piers, and the removal and reinstatement of existing fencing, walls and hedging.
Temporary associated and ancillary works for the purposes of the proposed watermain, including the construction of stone tracks and temporary watercourse crossings, are also included in the application.
The overall planning application covers an area of approximately 10.8 hectares.
Carrowteigue Community Water Connection (CWC) submitted the application to Mayo County Council on August 19, and a decision is due by October 13, 2026.
