Pensioner dies after sustaining injuries on Croagh Patrick

The pensioner died while climbing Croagh Patrick in poor weather conditions.

A 79-year-old man has passed away from injuries received in a fall on Croagh Patrick, last Friday.

He has been named locally as Pat O’Mahony, who lived at The Harbour Mill complex at Westport Quay.

Mr O’Mahony fell on Croagh Patrick on Friday afternoon, during a period when the weather conditions were particularly poor.

He was airlifted to Mayo University Hospital on Rescue 118 helicopter, where he passed away from head injuries on Sunday.

Mr O’Mahony served as senior adviser to the Commission of Inquiry (Banking Sector) Ireland, 2010-2011, and was also chairman of the Irish Medicines Board.
