New facility for camper vans being built in Mayo town

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly has welcomed the construction of a new facility in Killala Town, to attract more campervans to the area.

Located at Killala Pier, the black water disposal facility allows camper-van owners to safely empty their toilets. The unit also contains a freshwater tap, allowing the campervans to re-fill their water tanks.

Speaking about the development, Cllr. Munnelly stated that there has been an increase in campervans visiting North Mayo in recent times, with many of them using the public toilets at Ross beach to empty their toilets. This had been causing the septic tank there to become overloaded, so a more sustainable solution was needed.

"There are more and more campervans visiting this area, and that's great- but the facilities were not there to support that. The toilets at Ross beach were being used (wrongly) for emptying their toilets - so a solution had to be found. The new unit at Killala Pier is connected to the town sewer, so this is a very sustainable way for campervans to dispose of black waste."

Cllr. Munnelly went on to explain that this was an idea that had been included in the Killala Town Centre First plan, and something that Killala Community Council had been asking for earlier this year.

"The Killala Town Centre First Plan, which was heavily informed by the views of the local community, contains an objective to improve facilities for camper vans in the town. This was also an issue raised by Killala Community Council earlier in the year - so it's nice to be delivering on this. I hope that this will bring more business to the town too."

Cllr. Munnelly concluded by thanking the council staff who worked to deliver this project. "This would not have happened without the innovation and leadership of a council engineer. Funding was sourced by me from a local council budget, and the work was all carried out by the local outdoor staff of the council. I would like to thank them all for the very good work that was completed here.
