Pedestrian safety works for Mayo town
Cllr Alma Gallagher
Works will start this year to improve pedestrian safety in Ballyhaunis.
Cllr Alma Gallagher had called on Mayo Co Council to consult with Transport Infrastructure Ireland to conduct a feasibility study for the installation of traffic lights at Clare St and carry out line-marking to maximise car parking.
The council's Acting Head of Roads Conrad Harley told the recent meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District that "the first priority" was for improvement works at the existing adjacent pedestrian crossing on Bridge St.
"This will involve improvements to the crossing, including the provision of a raised crossing, movement of this crossing to away from the shop entrance, increasing visibility of the flashing beacons and additional advance signage. These works will complement the new adjacent footbridge which when completed along with the upgraded pedestrian facility will significantly improve the safety of pedestrians along this street."
Mr Harley said the works will start in 2026 and the traffic lights will then be considered.
