Pedestrian crossing for 'dangerous' Ballina location
Work on the pedestrian crossing is due to start next year.
Plans are progressing for a pedestrian crossing at a busy road near a GAA grounds in North Mayo.
Members of Ballina Municipal District were told at their meeting last week that a new pedestrian crossing will be installed near the Sean Duffy Community Centre and GAA pitch in Ardnaree.
Area Engineer Orla Bourke told councillors that a funding application has been made and details of numerous representations by members have been included in support of this application. Ms Bourke said it is hoped that works will commence in the second quarter of next year, subject to funding.
Cllr John O’Hara had submitted a motion calling for greater safety standards at the location, saying: “A dangerous situation has been going on there for a long time and every evening there are about six stewards from Ardnaree GAA out policing the road and I must compliment them because it is so dangerous.
"There is no parking inside so people park across the road and everywhere. It is an old GAA pitch and many people use the Sean Duffy Centre so I welcome the update that work on a pedestrian crossing will start next year.”
Cllr Annie May Reape also welcomed the news, saying: “Every one of us has been on this case for so long so at least there is some progress to report. There are so many housing estates and residents exiting into the same area.”
Cllr Marie Therese Duffy added: “It will be great to see a safer pedestrian crossing there, numerous people have been asking for a timeline so the fact it looks like it will be Q2 for a start is great.”
