Thousands participated in the Mayo.ie Western People West of Ireland Women’s Mini Marathon and the support of the hundreds who lined the streets has also been praised.
Charlie Lambert, Head of Mayo Sports Partnership, one of the organisers of the event, said they were delighted by the atmosphere along the route.
“There were lots of people supporting family members, charity groups and general supporters from around Ballina,” he said. “Talking to some of the participants they were delighted that so many people were out on route and supporting them.” Mr Lambert said the second staging of the event in Ballina had been very positive and he also commended the large number of volunteers who contributed.
“Conditions were ideal, but it was a bit warm and people were not expecting the bit of sun,” he said. “The participants said the atmosphere on the route was fantastic so a big thanks to all the Ballina people and we are thankful to everyone who was out supporting them.” Meanwhile, Aidan McNulty, Commercial Manager of the Western People, stated it was a fantastic day.
“For the second year in a row we have had a very memorable day and thank God the weather helped and there was a lovely atmosphere in the Market Square,” he said. “We are very thankful to the Mayo Sports Partnership, the two athletics clubs Ballina AC and Moy Valley and all the volunteers, this does not happen without them.”
