Mayo in mourning at passing of retired garda

Former Garda Bob McCallion was a native of Donegal but lived most of his life in Swinford, Co Mayo.

There is great sadness throughout Swinford and wider Mayo and Donegal at the passing of retired Garda Bob McCallion.

A native of Carndonagh in Co Donegal, Bob and wife Nancy were hugely popular and valued figures of the Swinford community where they raised their family and where Bob was a respected member of An Garda Síochána.

Tragedy befell the family in 2009 when their son, Robert, also a Garda, was killed in the line of duty when struck by a stolen vehicle in Letterkenny. In 2019, Robert’s older brother John, also a member of An Garda Síochána, passed suddenly during a bike ride.

Paddy (Donegal) and John (Sligo), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, family circle, neighbours, and his large circle of friends and former Garda Síochána colleagues.

He will repose at his home on Park Road in Swinford from 2pm to 7pm this Sunday, May 18 and Monday from 2pm until 6pm with removal to the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, Swinford arriving at 7pm.

Bob's funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday next, May 20 at 12noon prior to burial in Kilconduff Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
