'Not good enough in this day and age' - lack of lighting in busy Mayo town criticised

A Claremorris councillor has said it is ‘not good enough’ that a popular area of the town has inadequate public lighting.
Cllr Richard Finn submitted a notice of motion at last week’s Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District meeting calling for the installation of public lighting on the road at Claremorris Sports Ground between the nearby industrial estate and Monaghan's mushroom facility.
Mayo Co Council's senior engineer Conrad Harley said the council previously sought funding for these lights but was unsuccessful.
“This road will be included with an adjacent road which is due to be presented to an MD meeting recommending that they are taken in charge early in 2025,” he said. “We have repeatedly applied for various grants for funding for these lights and also for lights around the walkway surrounding the adjacent football pitches. To date, we have not been successful, but we will endeavour to seek funding from any appropriate source.”
Cllr Finn said he was not happy that the roads were not yet taken in charge.
“It is not good enough in this day and age to have modern facilities but no public lighting. Let’s continue to fight this and ensure it is installed ASAP," he remarked.
