New skate park is proving popular in Mayo town

The new Castlebar skate park is already proving to be an attraction.
Castlebar’s new skate park is already proving to be a hit after opening earlier this month.
The Lannagh Road facility had been long-awaited with a number of campaigns taking place for a skate park in the town over the years.
The project was approved by local councillors despite some concerns from residents in a nearby estate.
Castlebar Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Donna Sheridan said she was delighted that the skate park is now open and in use straight away, describing it as "a brilliant amenity for Castlebar", adding: "It's an exciting time for the Lough Lannagh area and leisure and youth facilities in the town."
“It’s great and there has been a huge interest in it. It was a long time coming,” stated Cllr Ger Deere. “It’s another great addition to the Lough Lannagh area,” he added.
The next step in developing sporting facilities in the county town is to find the remaining funds needed for the sports campus project, The site at Knockaphunta in Castlebar is to receive €7.5m in Government funding under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSF). However, the project in its entirety will cost €12.14m, leaving Mayo County Council scrambling to make up the deficit.
The development will feature a multi-lane, international-standard running track, and multi-sport playing fields with new 4G synthetic grass.
“The council have to come up with quite a bit of funding but this is a project that will benefit the entire county. We all need to come together as councillors to make sure it happens,” said Cllr Deere.
