New plans for former popular Mayo restaurant

The popular restaurant closed its doors in February 2025 much to the disappointment of many people in Castlebar.

A former Mayo restaurant is to be transformed into community office space, writes Keith Bourke.

Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for the development in Castlebar.

It will see the former Mill Lane restaurant undergo a change of use and the expansion of the existing offices of Tusla, the child and family agency in the town.

Dextex Ltd submitted a planning application for the project to the local authority.

The application site is located on Mill Lane in the centre of Castlebar and is occupied by an existing three-storey building which is unoccupied at ground floor and the upper floors are occupied by office space.

Council planners said the proposed development would result in a number of internal changes which raise no concerns from a planning perspective. There are no alterations proposed to the exterior.

“The proposed change of use does not give rise to concerns for the planning authority. The principle of the proposed change of use within an existing on town centre site is considered acceptable,” planners stated.
